  Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is a malignant process originating in the prostate gland – a gland involved only in reproduction. Aside from skin cancer it is the most common malignancy that men face. It is a serious condition that with early detection and appropriate treatment often has a very high likelihood of cure. With many therapies available to a patient it is very important that he be educated about screening, detection, and possible treatments.

Often, a patient is referred by his primary care physician for the evaluation of an abnormal screening test. This may be either a blood test (PSA) or an abnormal physical exam. An initial exam and review of lab work may prompt a biopsy, which remains the only way to diagnose prostate cancer. Additionally, we may obtain urinary genetic tests, which represent the latest tools in the detection of cancer.

If prostate cancer is diagnosed then all treatment options should be discussed and understood. Currently we offer all the FDA and American Urological Association suggested treatments for this disease. These include surgery (either traditional or robotic), radiation (external beam or “seeds”/brachytherapy), cryotherapy (freezing), hormonal treatment, and watchful waiting. Each of these treatments has unique risks and benefits. Exploring and understanding each are the most important in curing cancer and preserving the maximum quality of life.

We are the first group of surgeons in Prince William County to use the Da Vinci robot. Additionally, we are the only group of urologists in the area with specific fellowship training in prostate cancer and robotic surgery. Fellowships are designed to give more in depth study, teaching, and experience in a particular discipline. With regard to urologic cancers - formal fellowships add 2 years to the normal 6-year training period. It is clear that in the area of urologic cancers and surgery experience and training matter. We are proud to have physicians that have this experience and training that will take the time to build a strong relationship with each patient. We appreciate and respect that each patient and his disease are not the same, and approach each man with this in mind.
